THE FIREHOUSE
Built in 1847, the original Fire Headquarters is by no means the oldest building in Salem, but is definitely one of the most interesting. The building used to house multiple horse teams in the days before vehicles were used in firefighting. It was these horse teams and brave fire fighters that fought in the Great Salem Fire in 1914. The fire tore through most of the densely populated part of the city, leaving 20,000 homeless and jobless as most of the factories were destroyed in the fire.
In addition to the Salem Fire brigades, 22 surrounding communities sent in fire fighters as well as 1,700 National Guardsmen to assist with firefighting as well as the cleanup and prevention of looting after the fire was extinguished. Once fire trucks became available, half of the basement was filled in to support the weight of the vehicles. The other half of the basement, where the brewery is located, still housed a horse team for years alongside the original Salem fire trucks.
